Caran d’Ache is a world renowned and incredibly popular brand - for good reason! The 2024 special edition ‘Cosmic Blue’ is an absolute triumph in design, ergonomics and quality…and it won’t break the bank. Originally from Geneva, Switzerland, Caran d’Ache evolved from ‘Fabrique Genevoise de Crayons’ through several iterations to become a leader in the creation of exceptional writing equipment, stationery accessories and art materials whilst maintaining high levels of sustainability, social responsibility and environmentally friendly practices.
Caran d’Ache Cosmic Blue: Born from a History of Excellence
The brand began as a family owned business in 1915, utilising the natural materials present in Switzerland to produce quality pencils at affordable prices. The name Caran d’Ache arrived with the new owner Arnold Schweiter in 1924.
The name 'Caran d'Ache' has several origins. The Turkish word for pencil is 'kara-tash,' meaning black stone. The Russian word 'karandash' was adopted by French cartoonist Emmanuel Poiré, who changed it to Caran d'Ache. Schweitzer then adopted this name, creating the brand.
Caran d'Ache has a rich history of innovation. In 1929, they designed the first mechanical pencil, Fixpencil, with a patented clamp mechanism. Two years later, they introduced the Prismalo Aquarelle, a coloured pencil that turns into watercolour when wetted. This unique feature made it a groundbreaking product in 1931. The Prismalo Aquarelle can be used dry like a regular coloured pencil or wet to create watercolour effects. It can also be used on damp paper for a different effect. Over the years, the Aquarelle pencils have been enhanced and remain a popular product from Caran d'Ache.
The 849, released the same year as the moon landing, became popular for its simple finish and sturdy construction. Following the Ecridor, it was designed to adapt to any colour or finish. Caran d'Ache recognized this versatility, creating versions from recycled Nespresso barrels and collaborating with designers like Paul Smith. The 849 also honored icons such as Yves Klein. Its impact was so significant that it appeared on a Swiss postage stamp celebrating Swiss design.
Caran d'Ache prioritizes quality, sustainability, and social responsibility. Their pencils use FSC or PEFC certified wood from responsibly managed forests. They've integrated solar power and repurpose 80 tonnes of wood shavings for heating, cutting CO2 emissions. Caran d'Ache's water-based varnish and recycling efforts have reduced water consumption by 30% in four years. Their hand-assembled writing instruments are designed to last, combating throwaway culture. The company champions workplace well-being and community support, offering free training to Swiss visual arts teachers and a program for workers with disabilities.
