Father’s day is a day of honouring fatherhood and paternal bonds, as well as the influence of fathers in society and in a year where - for many of us -  seeing our Fathers is long overdue! 

Unlike Mother’s day which is connected to a traditional Christian holiday, Father’s day is a much more modern advent. Interestingly, it took longer to be adopted in the UK than the USA where it originates. 

The first Father’s day took place in 1908 but appeared to be a singular event and didn't really begin to take hold until after 1910. The UK began to adopt the holiday during World War Two when advertisers used the influence of the American holiday to promote the sale of items to be sent to troops overseas and in the field. By the end of the war, Father’s Day was a national Institution in the UK. 

In 1972, the President of the USA - Richard Nixon - declared Father’s Day a national holiday and signed it into law as part of his re-election campaign. Unlike Mother’s Day, Fathers Day is celebrated on the same day in the UK and US (as well as the majority of the world's nations which celebrate the holiday) - the third Sunday in June.  Some countries, particularly those which are dominated by Roman Catholicism, celebrate Father’s Day  on March 19th as this date is the feast of St Joseph - husband to Mary and adoptive father of Jesus - and Father’s Day was more traditionally linked to spiritual fatherhood.

Makers Cabinet Høvel

The Small Leather Pad from Off Lines is hand-made from soft black nappa leather and contains single refillable sheets of off-white 90 gsm bleach-free paper, held in place with an elasticated band.
